Former Barcelona captain Gerard Pique has reignited the debate surrounding the rivalry with Real Madrid ahead of the 2026-27 season. Speaking on the sidelines of the Kings League club world cup in Milan, the former defender maintained that the Blaugrana still hold the advantage over their traditional rivals.

"I think that Barcelona, even today, are still superior," Pique said. He pointed to the status and confidence gained from winning the last two league titles as a foundation for the upcoming campaign. He also highlighted the continuity of Hans-Dieter Flick, who is entering his third season, as a major strength for the Catalan side, noting that the squad has fully absorbed his philosophy.

Pique also shed light on the involvement of Barcelona star Lamine Yamal in the Kings League, describing a gradual progression of the teenager's role. "Having him with us is wonderful. He started out as a fan of the tournament when he was fourteen or fifteen years old, when we launched the project, then he later joined after he owned a team, and now he has a club taking part in the club world cup," Pique explained.

The Kings League president noted that Yamal is now deeply engaged, attending matches and even taking penalties. However, Pique warned that Yamal's team, "La Capital CF," faces stiff competition in the current tournament as the level of play continues to rise.
