Northern Ireland edge past Guinea despite Atcheson red card

Michael O'Neill praised his team's character in a 1-0 win over Guinea, even after Tom Atcheson was sent off.

Northern Ireland secured a 1-0 victory over Guinea in an international friendly. The only goal of the match came in the ninth minute when Blackburn Rovers defender Tom Atcheson scored on his first start for the national side after connecting with an Isaac Price cross.

The match turned difficult in the second half when Atcheson was shown a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Abdoul Karim Traore. Manager Michael O'Neill admitted that the dismissal disrupted the flow of the game.

The sending off killed the game and for the last 20 to 25 minutes, but they showed great character to go and win the game. Michael O'Neill

Despite playing with ten men, Northern Ireland maintained their lead to keep a clean sheet. O'Neill utilized the fixture to provide opportunities for younger players, including senior debuts for Liverpool’s Kieran Morrison and Arsenal’s Ceadach O'Neill.

The team will now travel to Lille for their final preparation match against France. O'Neill emphasized that while the upcoming game will be a significant challenge, the team aims to give a strong account of itself.
