France's quest for the 2026 World Cup trophy ended in the semifinals following a 2-0 defeat to Spain. The result denied the French team a chance to reach their third consecutive final.
After the match, captain Kylian Mbappé was visibly frustrated, openly questioning head coach Didier Deschamps' tactical approach. Mbappé noted that Spain dominated proceedings, particularly pointing to the influence of Rodri in midfield.
We were three against two in the middle of the field, and it's tough against Spain. Fabian and Rodri had enough time to play. There was a lack of communication during the press. I think we should have pressed them man-to-man and forced them to run with us. Kylian Mbappé
The forward acknowledged that the team's game plan failed. France intended to apply high pressure to disrupt Spain's rhythm but were undone by technical errors and sloppy play. Substitutions including Adrien Rabiot, Désiré Doué, and Rayan Cherki failed to spark a turnaround.
The Real Madrid star took full responsibility as captain while emphasizing that the team simply did not do what was required in a semifinal. Despite the exit, Mbappé remains in contention for the Golden Boot, sharing the lead with Lionel Messi on eight goals. France will now play for third place this Saturday in Miami Gardens.
