Lionel Messi sustains injury ahead of 2026 World Cup
Inter Miami's medical staff diagnosed the forward with hamstring overload and bruising following a match against Philadelphia Union.
Inter Miami has officially confirmed that Lionel Messi sustained an injury during their victory against Philadelphia Union. The Argentine felt discomfort in his left thigh after taking a free kick and had to be substituted in the 73rd minute.
Medical examinations revealed an overload and bruising in the left hamstring, attributed to muscle fatigue. While the player was able to leave the field without assistance, his return to full training depends on his ongoing clinical and functional progress.
The injury raises concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup. As the captain of the Argentina national team, Messi is central to the defending champions' preparation. Their opening group stage match against Algeria is scheduled for June 16 in Kansas City.
Head coach Lionel Scaloni has yet to announce the final 26-man roster for the tournament. Argentina is currently planning two preparatory friendly matches in early June against Honduras and Iceland to finalize their squad.
