A 70ft (21-meter) statue of Lionel Messi in Kolkata, West Bengal, is set to be dismantled due to significant safety concerns. The decision follows reports from local residents who observed the structure swaying during windy conditions.

Engineers from the Public Works Department inspected the monument and confirmed that its structural integrity has been severely compromised. State legislator Sharadwat Mukherjee confirmed that the statue has been declared unsafe for its current location.

The fibreglass and iron monument, which took a 45-person crew 27 days to assemble, is currently secured with heavy-duty ropes. Authorities have also erected barricades to protect traffic and pedestrians. Moving the structure poses a logistical challenge due to its proximity to a busy road and a subway station.
