Kasper Schmeichel announces retirement due to shoulder injury

Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39. The decision comes after he was unable to sufficiently recover from a serious shoulder injury that has sidelined him for months.

The injury was initially sustained during a Nations League quarter-final match against Portugal in March 2025. Schmeichel later aggravated the condition during a Europa League fixture for Celtic against Stuttgart. After consulting with multiple surgeons and medical experts, the goalkeeper concluded that a return to top-flight football is not feasible.

Schmeichel bows out with an illustrious career, having earned 120 caps for Denmark. He represented his country at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020. Domestically, he is best known for his decade at Leicester City, where he won both the Premier League and the FA Cup. He concludes his playing days after a successful two-year spell in Glasgow, where he secured two Scottish Premiership winners' medals with Celtic.
