Jurgen Klopp wants to 'reclaim' flag amid German political climate

New Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp has stated that his team can help ensure that "national pride is not entrusted to the wrong people" following recent electoral gains by far-right parties. Klopp emphasised that while he is not a political expert, he feels a responsibility to "reclaim the flag" for everyone.

Klopp explained that he wants waving the flag to be associated with joy and gratitude for living in a wonderful country, rather than negative connotations. He advocates for "positive patriotism," arguing that one can be proud of being German while remaining open-minded, diverse, and kind. He added that while social issues like healthcare are critical, football has the unique power to foster a sense of community.

Alongside his comments, Klopp announced an extensive 44-man squad for four upcoming Nations League matches, featuring 16 uncapped players. The first group, including Premier League stars Kai Havertz, Kevin Schade, and Anton Stach, is set to face the Netherlands and Greece.

A second group, which includes Florian Wirtz, will prepare for fixtures against Serbia and Greece. Klopp takes the helm following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, who left his post after Germany's exit at this summer's World Cup.
