Spanish journalist Julio Maldonado has assessed the 2025/26 performance of Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin on his YouTube channel, Mundo Maldini. The expert rated the Ukrainian's work as "good" but emphasized that comparing him directly to Thibaut Courtois is pointless.
Maldonado noted that there were specific instances, particularly in the matches against Bayern Munich, where Lunin could have performed better. According to the journalist, the goal conceded from a corner kick was avoidable. Nevertheless, he believes the goalkeeper position at the club is well-covered and does not see a need for Real Madrid to sign another keeper.
"Comparing him to Courtois is pointless. I think some of the goals in the matches against Bayern could have been avoided. That goal from the corner kick... But I think he did his job more or less. Good work, but nothing more. I don't think Real Madrid needs another goalkeeper," said Julio Maldonado.
The journalist also suggested that the primary variable remains the player's own ambition. Since Lunin may desire to be a first-choice goalkeeper, he could potentially look for a move away from the club regardless of his current standing.
Reports have indicated that offers of 20 million euros have been made for Lunin, but Real Madrid is reportedly holding out for a higher transfer fee.
