Jude Bellingham was left devastated following England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, a loss that denied the Three Lions a spot in their first final since 1966. The 23-year-old, who enjoyed a stellar tournament with seven goal contributions, struggled to process the result after a difficult year.
Reflecting on the match, Bellingham spoke candidly about the emotional weight of another major tournament exit. Having endured a testing club campaign with Real Madrid and the sting of the Euro 2024 final, the midfielder admitted he found it difficult to face the supporters again.
I think we can take a lot of experience from this, but it is so gutting. I wanted to be a part of an England squad that finally done it and got it over the line. To be here, telling the fans the same things they've heard for years, it's really gutting. Jude Bellingham
Manager Thomas Tuchel was quick to address the tactical collapse that followed England's opening goal from Anthony Gordon. The manager acknowledged that his decision to switch to a back-five formation allowed Argentina to regain momentum and become more aggressive.
We decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open. Argentina played with more risk, played with more rhythm and played with the feeling maybe that they had nothing to lose any more, which freed them up and pulled us back. Of course the responsibility is on the coach. Thomas Tuchel
Despite the criticism, Tuchel's position remains secure with the backing of the FA. The German manager is expected to continue his tenure until the home European Championships in 2028. England must now prepare for a third-place play-off against France on Saturday, a fixture that offers little solace to a squad reeling from their semi-final exit.
