Portugal national team head coach Jorge Jesus has addressed the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s international retirement. After 23 years of representing his country, the superstar’s departure remains a major talking point, and Jesus has made it clear that he stands by the decisions he made during his tenure.

The tension between the coach and the forward peaked during a match against Norway, when Ronaldo warmed up but did not appear on the pitch. The player’s frustration led him to leave the training camp without authorization, resulting in a 30-day suspension from the Portuguese Football Federation and, eventually, his decision to step away from international football.

I wouldn't change anything, absolutely nothing. I made a decision as a coach, putting the interests of my team and the Portuguese national team first. Jorge Jesus

Jesus firmly rejected the notion that his management triggered the exit of Portugal’s all-time top scorer. "I am convinced that I did nothing that caused what happened," he stated. The manager previously revealed that he had spoken with Ronaldo before his first squad announcement, urging him to remain part of the project because he needed him, but ultimately had to accept the player's decision.

Ronaldo’s illustrious career with Portugal concludes with 234 caps and 146 goals. His trophy cabinet includes the Euro 2016 title and the UEFA Nations League trophies in 2019 and 2025.
