FIFA has confirmed the officiating team for the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 match between Brazil and Japan. Italian referee Maurizio Mariani has been selected to take charge of the high-stakes encounter.
Mariani will be supported by fellow Italians Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni as assistant referees. The fourth official and VAR responsibilities will be handled by Swiss officials Sandro Schaerer and Stephane De Almeida.
This marks Mariani's third appearance at the tournament. He previously officiated the group stage matches between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, and Colombia's victory over DR Congo. The Italian referee has maintained a disciplined approach, having issued no red cards during his tournament assignments so far.
The appointment follows a standard exchange program between UEFA and CONMEBOL, which sees European officials working across tournament fixtures. Mariani brings extensive experience, including his recent work during the 2024 Copa América and the Conference League final.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian squad continues its preparation for the match. On Saturday morning, head coach Carlo Ancelotti saw his full roster participate in training for the first time since the group stage concluded, with the exception of injured forward Raphinha.
