For Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter, this summer's World Cup represents a significant shift in perspective. Having previously led the USMNT, he is now turning the page to become a dedicated supporter of his son, Sebastian, who has earned his place in the national squad.
Berhalter insists that his son's rise is entirely merit-based. "He always comes up with something, because he's so focused on improvement and getting better," Gregg says. Sebastian himself echoes this sentiment, noting that he never sought an easy path: "I knew if I got a call from my dad, I would have to earn it double as any other player."
Beyond his son, Berhalter remains deeply invested in his current club players. He recently went viral for his genuine excitement regarding goalkeeper Chris Brady receiving a national team call-up. Brady noted that the coach's reaction left him shocked but deeply appreciative, highlighting the strong bond Berhalter fosters within his teams.
As the tournament begins, Berhalter plans to be in the stands, continuing a family tradition that has spanned decades. In 2002, a young Sebastian watched his father play, and in 2022, he witnessed him coach. Now, the roles are reversed. "For sure on the 12th, I'm gonna be there supporting the team," Gregg says, as he balances his duties with the Fire with his new life as a World Cup spectator.
