Girona has been officially relegated from the top flight of Spanish football. The team failed to win any of their final eight La Liga matches, a run that proved fatal to their survival hopes. A 1-1 draw against Elche confirmed their drop to the second tier.
Club president Delfi Geli publicly apologized to the supporters, acknowledging that the entire organization shares responsibility for the season's outcome. "It is a difficult day. First of all, I would like to apologize to our fans who supported the team at Montilivi; we had chances to secure safety, but we didn't succeed," Geli stated.
The fall is particularly stark for a club that competed in the Champions League just two seasons ago. The management is now preparing for a massive reality check, as the economic environment of the second division requires significant adjustments.
"We will have to make tough and difficult decisions. We have to start almost from scratch. Coming from the first division guarantees nothing in the second; we must do things very well to return," the president added.
The club is currently entering a period of reflection to identify what went wrong. The future of manager Michel remains a key talking point, as the club aims to analyze the situation calmly and construct a competitive squad capable of challenging for promotion next season.
