Fluminense visits Athletico-PR in a battle for the top four
Two years after fighting against relegation, Fluminense and Athletico-PR face off as direct competitors in the top half of the table.
On Sunday, August 30, Fluminense travels to the Arena da Baixada to face Athletico-PR in the 25th round of the Brazilian Série A. The reunion comes almost two years after their last encounter at this stadium, in a scenario that has changed significantly.
In December 2024, both clubs were desperate to avoid relegation. Their meeting at the time ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that proved pivotal for Fluminense's eventual escape from the drop zone, while Athletico-PR ended up being relegated to Série B.
Today, the narrative is completely different. Both sides are now fighting at the top of the table, currently sitting within the G4. Athletico-PR, having returned to the top flight, occupies third place with 44 points, while Fluminense follows in fourth with 41.
Fluminense is balancing its domestic campaign with its progress in the Copa Libertadores, where they are currently in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Athletico-PR is fully focused on the league, led by striker Kevin Viveros, the current top scorer of the competition with 16 goals.
