Fàbregas reflects on "Pizzagate" ahead of Manchester United clash
Cesc Fàbregas prepares for a match against Manchester United, revisiting the infamous 2004 tunnel incident involving Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ahead of a trip to Old Trafford where Como coach Cesc Fàbregas will face Manchester United, the Spaniard is once again recalling the event that defined his early years in English football. The incident, famously dubbed "Pizzagate," remains one of the sport's most enduring tales.
The chaos occurred in October 2004 after Arsenal saw their 49-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League ended by United. A heated tunnel brawl ensued, during which a slice of pizza was thrown, striking Sir Alex Ferguson.
I wanted to take part in the clash, but I didn't know how to do it, so I just threw the slice of pizza. And when I saw the person it hit, that wasn't what I had intended. Cesc Fàbregas
Fàbregas kept the secret for years before finally confirming his role in 2018. He explained that his frustration from losing the game and being left out of the squad led to a spontaneous, youthful reaction in the tunnel.
Although Fàbregas has since apologised directly to Ferguson, the story follows him whenever he returns to the scene of the incident. Now back at Old Trafford in a professional capacity, the former midfielder faces a new challenge against the club that once served as the backdrop for one of his most infamous moments.
