USA women's national team head coach Emma Hayes avoided direct commentary on the red cards and Brazilian complaints regarding officiating following her side's 1-0 victory at Arena Castelão on Tuesday. During the post-match press conference, the American coach chose to highlight her own conduct on the touchline.
When questioned about the chaos in the final minutes of the match, which saw Brazil head coach Arthur Elias sent off, Hayes emphasized what she described as "emotional control" as a fundamental part of her job.
My job is to coach my team, manage my behaviors, and influence my players to have emotional control. My job is to respect the staff, remain in my technical area, and be a role model for the athletes, showing the behaviors I expect from them. Emma Hayes
Without making direct reference to Elias, with whom she had exchanged public praise just last week, Hayes maintained that she could only assess her own actions. The coach expressed satisfaction with her conduct throughout the friendly and praised the environment created by the Brazilian fans, noting the high energy at the venue.
