Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo was sidelined for the Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid due to muscle discomfort. The Dutchman was completely ruled out of the matchday squad, which saw the Reds secure a 2-1 victory, after suffering niggles in both adductors following his previous 90-minute appearance.
Head coach Andoni Iraola confirmed the nature of the injury, noting that while it is not considered a long-term issue, the short turnaround between matches creates a difficult selection situation ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture against Fulham.
I don't know if he will be back for Fulham. I hope so, but I don't know. He doesn't have a proper injury, but he finished with niggles in both of the adductors the other day. We expected to have him for today, but it hasn't been possible. Andoni Iraola
Gakpo's absence comes at a frustrating time, as the forward had started the current campaign in excellent form, registering one goal and three assists in his first three matches. The club's medical team is currently prioritizing his recovery process, with a final decision on his availability expected closer to the weekend.
