Brazil leads the ranking of Round of 16 appearances in World Cup history

In their upcoming Round of 16 clash against Norway at the 2026 World Cup, Brazil will extend their historical lead as the team with the most appearances at this stage of the competition. The match marks the 13th time the Seleção has reached the Round of 16 in World Cup history.
Behind Brazil in the rankings is Argentina, who have reached this stage 11 times, while Germany and Spain share third place with 10 appearances each. The top five is rounded out by Belgium, France, the Netherlands, England, and Mexico, all of whom have appeared in the Round of 16 nine times.
Brazil's performance at this stage has been remarkably consistent. In their 12 previous appearances, they have advanced to the quarterfinals 10 times, suffering elimination on only two occasions: against Spain in 1934 and Argentina in 1990.
Notably, only one of Brazil's 10 successful progressions was decided by a penalty shootout. This occurred during the 2014 World Cup, when they overcame Chile after a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time.
