Bangu to Host Free Walking Tour Honoring Women's Football Pioneers
The Rolé Carioca project is organizing a tour in Bangu to highlight the history of women who defied prejudice to play football for the club.
Ahead of the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, the Rolé Carioca cultural project is hosting a free tour titled "Football and Memory: Bangu." Scheduled for June 28 in Rio de Janeiro, the event aims to shed light on the women who helped shape the sport long before it received its current level of recognition.
The route covers historic landmarks including the former Bangu Factory, the neighborhood train station, and the Moça Bonita Stadium. This edition specifically highlights the stories of Rose and Elzinha, athletes who wore the club's red-and-white jersey in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period immediately following the end of the ban on women's football in the country.
This is significant because women were officially prohibited from playing football in Brazil between 1941 and 1979. By including the journeys of these players in a sports memory tour, the project seeks to broaden the narrative of national football history, which has traditionally focused on male figures and achievements. The tour connects these stories to demonstrate how the sport was shaped by workers and women who defied barriers to occupy space on and off the pitch.
The activity takes place on June 28, departing at 10:00 AM from the Bangu Shopping center. Participation is free of charge.
