Arsenal sack head of sports medicine Dr. Zafar Iqbal
Arsenal have parted ways with their head of sports medicine following an internal review into the club's injury record during their recent title-winning campaign.
Arsenal have made the surprise decision to dismiss their head of sports medicine, Dr. Zafar Iqbal. The 51-year-old was informed of his immediate departure by chief executive Richard Garlick during a sudden meeting.
The move has left many at the club shocked. It follows an internal review commissioned by the club, involving Spanish physiotherapist Joaquin Acedo, aimed at addressing the team's problematic injury record throughout the season.
Despite securing their first league title in 22 years, the club faced significant challenges during a gruelling 63-game campaign. Mikel Arteta's side frequently struggled with the absence of key players, including Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, and Kai Havertz, who all missed significant time due to injuries.
The medical department had been under intense scrutiny as staff debated whether high training intensities and match selection contributed to player fatigue. As the club prepares to defend their title, restructuring the medical setup has become a priority for Arteta to ensure better player durability.
