London club Arsenal is preparing for an unexpected move in the transfer market following a major injury blow to their defense. Reports suggest the Gunners are seriously considering signing John Stones, who is currently a free agent.
The need for emergency reinforcements stems from the fitness issues surrounding William Saliba. The French defender played through a back problem during the 2026 World Cup, with the situation worsening significantly during the semi-final match against Spain. He is now expected to be sidelined for several months.
Signing the 32-year-old Stones, whose contract with Manchester City expired earlier this month, is viewed as a realistic short-term solution. A key factor in this potential move is the relationship between the player and Mikel Arteta, who worked together during the Spaniard's tenure as an assistant coach at Manchester City.
Stones brings extensive experience to the squad, having made 295 appearances for Manchester City since 2016. His trophy cabinet includes six Premier League titles and a Champions League crown, making him a highly experienced option for the Londoners during this defensive crisis.
