Aitana Bonmati returns to Spain squad for crucial England qualifier

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has been included in the Spain squad for the upcoming decisive FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against England. The playmaker has successfully recovered from a fractured left fibula, which she sustained in a training ground accident last November.

Bonmati recently returned to competitive action, making a substitute appearance during Barcelona's victory over Lyon in the UEFA Women's Champions League final this past Saturday.

Her return comes at a pivotal time for the national team. Following a 1-0 defeat to England at Wembley in April, Spain must secure a victory at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on June 5 to keep control of their qualifying group. With only the winners of each League A group progressing directly to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, there is little room for error.

Should the match against England end in a draw, Spain would need to defeat Iceland and rely on England losing to Ukraine on June 9 to have any chance of topping the group.
