Yozhef Sabo: Matviy Ponomarenko must grow into a Dynamo leader

Former Ukraine national team head coach Yozhef Sabo has commented on the performance of Dynamo Kyiv striker Matviy Ponomarenko during the Ukrainian Cup final against Chernihiv, which ended in a 3-1 victory for the Kyiv side.

Sabo noted that the forward's performance was somewhat underwhelming compared to his usual high standards. The expert suggested that a reported minor injury likely played a significant role in his display. Furthermore, Sabo pointed out that it remains difficult for the young player to face teams that employ a dense, layered defensive system, as it limits his ability to utilize his pace.

Ponomarenko played a weak final, but I really hope this was a one-off. The lad needs to grow up, progress in the new season, and take on a leadership role at Dynamo. Yozhef Sabo

This season, Ponomarenko has made 22 appearances for the Dynamo first team, recording 11 goals and one assist. Additionally, he has scored eight goals for the U-19 squad.
