Ahead of the Premier League opener against Fulham, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso clarified why Marco Palestra and Moises Caicedo were left out of the matchday squad. The pair missed the trip to Craven Cottage due to minor fitness setbacks sustained during the week.
Addressing the media, Alonso stated:
They had minor setbacks during the week, so they were not fit to play tonight. New faces debut for us, Morgan and Max, and they are going to play important roles through the year.
Despite the injury concerns, Alonso maintained an aggressive approach for his first competitive game in charge. New signings Maxence Lacroix and Morgan Rogers were handed immediate debuts. The attacking lineup, featuring Cole Palmer, Rogers, and Joao Pedro, demonstrated the manager's intent to press high and control the game.
The absence of Caicedo shifted the midfield responsibility toward Romeo Lavia and Reece James. While the team found offensive success with three goals by the hour mark, the defensive vulnerabilities in the West London derby resulted in two goals conceded, reflecting the challenges of integrating a new system early in the campaign.
