Why Barcelona and Real Madrid are missing from La Liga's opening weekend
Spanish giants are absent from the opening matchday to allow World Cup stars sufficient recovery time.

La Liga returns for the 2026-27 campaign with a unique schedule, as Spanish heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid will not be participating in the opening weekend. This staggered start is the result of an agreement between the league and the AFE players' union, designed to protect the rest rights of players who reached the semi-finals of the World Cup.
The policy affects several key figures at both clubs. For Barcelona, the quartet of Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo, and Pau Cubarsi only resumed training this past Wednesday. The situation is mirrored at Real Madrid, where Marc Cucurella, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, and Aurelien Tchouameni were granted extra time off following their international duty.
Consequently, the giants' opening fixtures have been pushed to late August. Barcelona will now host Athletic Club at the Camp Nou on August 27, while Real Madrid are set to face Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu on August 26. Before those matches, Barca will open their title defence against Elche on August 23, and Jose Mourinho's new-look Madrid will debut at Espanyol on August 22.
Beyond player recovery, this scheduling strategy serves a practical purpose. Spreading fixtures across the latter half of August helps teams navigate Spain's extreme summer temperatures, ensuring that kick-off times are set for safer, cooler evening hours.
