Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG) could be set to become the 19th franchise in Liga MX. According to plans currently under development by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), there is a project to expand the number of teams in the first division in the near future.
The construction of a new stadium in Guadalajara is considered a key factor in this potential inclusion. According to reports, the expansion of the league is linked to the centralization of television rights, which is currently scheduled for 2028.
Liga MX is currently drafting new regulations and requirements for clubs participating in the league. The possibility of UdeG joining the top flight has raised questions about the future of the traditional promotion system, as the club has been one of the most vocal advocates for sporting promotion, even taking their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
UdeG president Alberto Castellanos has been a prominent figure in the campaign to restore promotion, recently taking his concerns to the Mexican Senate. The situation mirrors the path taken by Atlante, which eventually secured a place in the top circuit.
