In the first leg of the Apertura 2026 Liga de Expansión quarterfinals, Cancun FC failed to maintain their early lead at home against Pirata FC. The match at the Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the tie wide open for the return leg.
The hosts took the lead in the 8th minute when José Rodríguez capitalized on a defensive error. Despite controlling the rhythm in the first half, Cancun FC could not extend their lead, allowing the visitors to adjust and regroup during the break.
Mario García's side equalized in the 58th minute. Brian Figueroa set up Diego Cruz, who found space and played a precise through ball to Christian Fernández. The midfielder finished clinically past goalkeeper Edson Arce to level the score.
This result puts Pirata FC in a favorable position, as they finished higher in the league table than their opponents. Consequently, if the aggregate score remains tied after the second leg, Pirata FC will advance to the semifinals.
The return leg is scheduled for November 8 in Veracruz. Cancun FC must win to keep their title hopes alive, while a draw will be enough for Pirata FC to move forward.
