Miguel Herrera slams refereeing after Atlante vs Leon draw
Atlante coach Miguel Herrera questioned the officiating standards, calling for more consistency in the use of VAR during controversial moments.
Following a draw against Leon, Atlante manager Miguel Herrera has once again questioned officiating decisions. The coach called for more consistent criteria in controversial plays, particularly those that are subject to VAR review.
Herrera recalled that in the opening round, his team lost a game after a penalty was called against them for a play he considered less clear than the one occurring against Leon. His main frustration was not necessarily whether a penalty should have been given, but rather that the referee did not even go to the monitor to check the action.
The only thing I say is that the criteria should be equal. In the first round, they called a penalty against us that was much less of a foul than this one, and this time they didn't call it, nor did they even go to check it. What I complain about is that they should come and check. Miguel Herrera
Herrera also addressed the handball by Aaron Quiroz inside the box, explaining that from his perspective, it was not a penalty. He noted that the player's arm was in a natural position while jumping, with the ball hitting the shoulder first.
The coach further questioned whether the criteria explained by refereeing director Horacio Elizondo before the tournament are actually being applied. He suggested that either the instructions are being ignored or there is a breakdown in communication regarding how matches are being officiated.
