Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo has been officially announced as the new head coach of the Ecuador national team. This appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the manager, known as 'Muñeco', who has previously built his career exclusively in club football.
Gallardo replaces Sebastian Beccacece, who departed the role following Ecuador's participation in the 2026 World Cup. His contract with the Ecuadorian Football Federation runs until 2030, signaling a long-term project aimed at refreshing the squad and maintaining their standing among South America's top nations.
The primary goals for the new staff include the 2028 Copa América and, ultimately, qualifying for and competing in the 2030 World Cup. Gallardo will begin his tenure during an upcoming tour of Asia, where Ecuador is set to face South Korea and Japan, providing an early opportunity for the coach to implement his tactical ideas.
Gallardo arrives in Ecuador with a proven track record, most notably his historic spell at River Plate, where he secured 14 trophies, including two Copa Libertadores titles.
