The 2025/26 season has been a curious paradox for Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The goalkeeper concludes his loan spell at Girona, a side that confirmed its relegation to the second division following a draw against Elche. Meanwhile, ter Stegen technically shares in the success of Barcelona, who clinched the league title weeks ago during their victory over Real Madrid.
However, the goalkeeper's impact on Girona's campaign was minimal. Since his winter loan arrival, he made only two appearances—against Getafe and Real Oviedo. A thigh injury sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign, also ruling him out of international duty.
Ter Stegen's future at the Camp Nou is currently unclear. Having struggled with a torn patellar tendon and back issues between 2024 and 2025, he has long since lost his status as the primary choice to Joan Garcia. While he remains under contract until 2028, his high salary and injury history complicate a potential exit, even though the player reportedly prefers to stay with the Catalan giants.
