Manchester United endured a disastrous start to the new Premier League season, falling to a 2-0 defeat against Hull City at the MKM Stadium. The loss to the newly-promoted side has immediately piled pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
United defender Luke Shaw was candid in his assessment, admitting that the team failed to meet the required standards. Shaw highlighted a specific lack of preparation regarding Hull's known strengths, particularly their ability to create chances from set-pieces.
Really disappointing. It’s not us and we knew it was coming. I think as a whole, as a group, collectively, we could prepare better. Especially knowing how good they are at set-plays and what their dangers are. Luke Shaw
Despite enjoying long spells of possession during the second half, the Red Devils struggled to break down a disciplined Hull defense. Shaw acknowledged that the team lacked a cutting edge in the final third but refused to use the early stage of the season as an excuse for the performance.
Manager Michael Carrick has urged fans and media to maintain perspective, suggesting that one result does not necessitate an immediate overhaul of the team's approach. He insisted there were positive aspects to take from the day despite the frustration surrounding the final scoreline.
United will now spend the week at the training ground addressing their tactical issues before heading into their next Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town on August 30.
