Liverpool have officially signed Uruguay centre-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona. The deal for the 27-year-old includes an option to purchase the player permanently at the end of the campaign.
Araujo, who arrived at the Camp Nou from Boston River in 2018, found his playing time restricted last season under manager Hansi Flick. With Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín becoming the preferred central defensive partnership, Araujo made only 11 league starts during Barcelona's title-winning campaign.
The move comes as Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola looks to reinforce his backline following the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid and ongoing injury concerns regarding Joe Gomez and new signing Jeremy Jacquet. Regarding his new challenge, Araujo noted: "I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly."
The defender will be reunited with his international teammate Darwin Nunez at Anfield. Nunez welcomed the arrival on social media, telling the defender he is joining a "great club" and emphasizing the unique support of the Liverpool fans.
