Leeds United sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford in £45m record deal

Leeds United have completed the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford in a deal worth up to £45 million. The 23-year-old England international becomes the most expensive British goalkeeper in history, surpassing the previous £30m record set by Jordan Pickford's move to Everton in 2017.

As part of the agreement, Manchester City have secured a 20% sell-on clause and matching rights, ensuring they have first refusal should they choose to match future bids for the goalkeeper. The transfer follows Trafford's limited opportunities at the Etihad Stadium last season, where he made 17 appearances amidst strong competition.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke targeted the goalkeeper to address the departures of Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier this summer. The club's investment highlights their confidence in Trafford's potential, particularly following his standout performances at Burnley, where he was instrumental in their promotion campaign with 29 clean sheets.

Trafford, who began his career at City and had loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers, now aims to establish himself as the clear first-choice at Elland Road. He joins a goalkeeping department that currently includes Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns.
