Following a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United, Leeds United has climbed to third place in the Premier League. For the faithful at Elland Road, this start feels like a return to the glory days of the early 2000s under David O'Leary.
The foundation for this resurgence was laid nine months ago when Daniel Farke made a bold tactical gamble. Switching to a back three against Manchester City proved to be the turning point. Since that adjustment, Leeds have lost only five of their subsequent 29 league games, boasting one of the tightest defenses in the division, rivaling top clubs like Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.
Recruitment has played a pivotal role, with sporting director Adam Underwood focusing on physicality. The summer signings, including goalkeeper James Trafford and defenders Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi, were specifically brought in to handle the robust demands of the top flight.
In attack, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has thrived, netting 14 goals since December. The tactical shift allowed him a strike partner, liberating him from the isolated role he previously held. Calvert-Lewin is now aiming to become the first Leeds player since 1932 to score in six consecutive home league matches.
While Farke remains cautious about discussing European qualification, the current form has fans dreaming of a return to Champions League football for the first time in 24 years.
