La Liga officials are scheduled to carry out a pitch inspection at Celta Vigo's Estadio de Balaidos within the next 24 hours following reports of a suspected fungus outbreak. The damage to the playing surface has raised concerns regarding the viability of Sunday's opening match of the 2026-27 season against Osasuna.
Celta Vigo are understood to have requested a postponement of the fixture, while their opponents, Osasuna, remain open to playing the game as originally scheduled. The stadium, which hosted a friendly between Spain and Iraq in June, has been undergoing long-term renovation works as part of Spain's preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
While Celta had the option to postpone the match due to striker Borja Iglesias participating in the 2026 World Cup final, the club initially opted against it. Other opening weekend fixtures, such as Real Madrid v Real Sociedad and Barcelona v Athletic Club, were previously rescheduled due to player involvement in the World Cup.
