Jose Fonte joins Sunderland coaching staff
The experienced Portuguese defender has transitioned directly into a coaching role following his retirement.

Former central defender Jose Fonte, who concluded his 24-year professional career at the end of last season, has officially transitioned into coaching. The 42-year-old Portuguese international has joined the staff at English club Sunderland.
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris expressed a personal interest in bringing the experienced defender into his setup. Fonte will join the first-team coaching staff as a technical assistant.
In his new role, Fonte will work alongside a diverse technical team, including head analyst Isidre Ramon Madir, set-piece coach James Braine, and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler. His transition follows a distinguished playing career that saw him represent clubs such as Benfica, Southampton, and Lille.
