John Barnes: Rio Ngumoha must focus on end product
Liverpool legend John Barnes has urged 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha to prioritize consistency and goal contributions over individual flair as he develops.

Since his move from Chelsea to Merseyside, Rio Ngumoha has made significant strides, becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever starter in the Premier League and their youngest goalscorer by August 2025. His rapid rise even earned him an international debut for England, but Liverpool icon John Barnes is calling for patience regarding the 17-year-old’s progression.
Speaking to 247Bet, Barnes argued that the primary objective for Ngumoha in the 2026-27 campaign is establishing a routine of regular football rather than being thrust into the spotlight prematurely.
The next step is for him to play regularly. We automatically assume that all of a sudden he’s going to be playing for England and be the best player in the world. Unfortunately, we do that to our young players too much. We have to allow him to develop and grow slowly. John Barnes
Beyond finding consistency, Barnes emphasized the importance of output. While Ngumoha is praised for his direct, skillful running, the former winger believes that dribbling is only as valuable as the goals and assists it produces.
It's okay expressing himself and beating five players, but how many goals are you going to score? How many goals are you going to create? That's how you're going to be judged. It's not a question of reining him in, but a question of giving him end product and making him a valuable part of the team. John Barnes
Liverpool are reportedly working on a new contract for the teenager, as speculation links him with interest from Bayern Munich. With his 18th birthday approaching in August, Ngumoha is expected to play a prominent role in the squad as the club enters a new era.
