It has been five years since the football world was stunned by the announcement of Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona. In 2021, the club issued a statement revealing that, despite an agreement being reached between both parties, the contract could not be formalized due to economic and structural hurdles in accordance with La Liga regulations.
Barcelona expressed deep regret that the intentions of both the player and the club could not be fulfilled, formally parting ways with their most decorated player and all-time top scorer. The announcement marked the end of an era that had defined the club's success for over a decade.
To this day, the exact circumstances behind the exit remain a topic of debate. While Messi has consistently expressed his lingering affection for the club, tensions occasionally surfaced between him and club president Joan Laporta. Reconciliation efforts have so far yielded little beyond promises of a future statue and a tribute match.
However, the decision appeared to have no negative impact on Laporta's standing at the ballot box. Over the five years since that decision, the club has secured three league titles, two domestic Super Cups, and one domestic Cup.
