Feyenoord condemns firework incident leaving five Cambuur fans injured
Five SC Cambuur supporters suffered burns and eye injuries after fireworks were launched into the stands during their Eredivisie clash with Feyenoord.
The Eredivisie match between SC Cambuur and Feyenoord was marred by dangerous crowd trouble this Sunday. In the 12th minute, visiting supporters in the away section at the Kooi Stadion ignited a significant number of flares and launched fireworks onto the pitch and toward the home supporters, causing a 10-minute suspension of play.
One firework exploded dangerously close to Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst before players were led off the pitch. Following the match, SC Cambuur confirmed that five of their home supporters suffered burns, hearing damage, and eye injuries due to the projectiles launched into their seating area.
Feyenoord head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst issued an apology to Cambuur, and the club formally distanced itself from the actions, pledging to review camera footage to identify the individuals responsible. General manager Robert Eenhoorn expressed deep frustration, emphasizing that player and fan safety must take precedence over the match result, and called for a collective effort among stakeholders and the KNVB to address the ongoing issue of fan disorder.
SC Cambuur has promised a full investigation alongside local authorities. Leeuwarden mayor Foort van Oosten condemned the incident, promising a thorough probe into how such pyrotechnics were smuggled into the stadium. Meanwhile, the KNVB is facing scrutiny for allowing the game to resume. Jan Bluyssen, the KNVB's manager of professional football competition affairs, admitted the decision felt problematic and confirmed that the governing body will now revisit protocols to ensure supporter safety is prioritized over the completion of fixtures.
