France manager Didier Deschamps has eased concerns regarding the fitness of key defender William Saliba. Following medical examinations on Monday, it was confirmed that the Arsenal centre-back avoided a significant back injury during his 120-minute appearance in the Champions League final.
Deschamps revealed that the defender is in good condition and could have featured if necessary. However, the coaching staff has opted to manage his recovery carefully rather than risking him in the upcoming friendly against Ivory Coast.
William is doing well, he is going to be managed. If he had had to play tomorrow, he would have played. He was ready to play. But he will not play. It is management, just like for others. Didier Deschamps
Beyond the physical recovery, the coaching staff is focused on helping Saliba mentally recover from the heartbreak of missing out on European glory. Upon joining the international camp, Saliba reunited with five PSG players who celebrated victory in the same match. Deschamps acknowledged the contrast in spirits, noting that while the PSG contingent arrived in high spirits, the mood for Saliba was understandably more difficult.
The national team's medical staff will continue to monitor his progress to ensure there are no lingering effects from his demanding club season. Saliba may earn some minutes during Monday's friendly against Northern Ireland to build match rhythm. The primary objective for the team remains ensuring he is fully revitalised for France's World Cup opener against Senegal on June 16.
