Portugal defender Diogo Dalot has opened up about the atmosphere within the national team following the controversy involving Cristiano Ronaldo and João Neves. Speaking during a press conference, Dalot stated that the group was prepared for potential distractions even before the World Cup began.
The defender explained that the players held an internal discussion prior to the tournament, anticipating that the presence of a player like Ronaldo would inevitably generate intense public scrutiny. Dalot believes this proactive approach helped shield the group from the ensuing noise.
Criticism will always be part of the process, especially given our level. We had a conversation before the tournament to prepare for this moment. The trust we have in Cristiano and he has in us remains unchanged. Diogo Dalot
Dalot called for continued support from the fans for the upcoming challenges. He stressed that while the team accepts constructive criticism, their primary focus remains on their collective objectives in the tournament.
Under the leadership of Roberto Martínez, Portugal is currently preparing for their second group stage match against Uzbekistan on Tuesday. The head coach is expected to rotate his squad as he manages players' workloads ahead of a decisive clash against Colombia on June 27.
