Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo is free to return to the national team whenever he decides. The 41-year-old captain departed the Nations League camp after being an unused substitute against Norway and being informed he would not start against Denmark.

Ronaldo, who has recorded 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country, wrote on social media following his exit that he intends to explain his reasons to the Portuguese public in due course. Jesus, who previously managed the forward at Al-Nassr, emphasized that the decision rests with the player.

If he wants to, he'll return to the national team. We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who's going to decide. Jorge Jesus

The incident marked the first time the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star had been an unused substitute for his country in a competitive game since 2008. In his absence, AC Milan forward Goncalo Ramos has found the back of the net in all three matches he has started.

Teammates Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes have publicly supported the veteran, with Mendes noting that the squad would welcome Ronaldo back with "open arms" should he choose to return.
