The opening La Liga fixture of the 2026-27 season between Celta Vigo and Osasuna, scheduled for Sunday at the Estadio de Balaidos, faces a potential postponement. La Liga officials are set to conduct an urgent inspection of the stadium to evaluate the condition of the playing surface following a reported fungus outbreak.
Celta have submitted a formal request to delay the match due to the state of the turf. In contrast, Osasuna remain prepared to play as scheduled, creating uncertainty regarding the match's status.
A final decision is expected within the next 24 hours once league inspectors assess the extent of the damage. The surface issue is a significant setback for the venue, which is currently undergoing long-term redevelopment to prepare for the 2030 World Cup.
Celta previously held the option to postpone this fixture due to forward Borja Iglesias’s participation in the World Cup final but chose not to exercise it. Other clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, opted to delay their opening matches due to player involvement in the tournament.
Celta currently await a final ruling from the league. Should the match be postponed, the team under Claudio Giraldez will face a congested schedule later in the season, with the club likely forced to open their campaign with their next scheduled away game while restoration efforts at Balaidos continue.
