Caroline Weir signs for Lyon

OL Lyon

Scotland captain Caroline Weir has officially signed a three-year contract with French champions Lyon. The 30-year-old midfielder joins the club following the conclusion of her time at Real Madrid.

Weir spent four seasons in Spain, making 125 appearances and scoring 63 goals. Her tenure was marked by significant personal success, including winning the Real Madrid player of the year award in both 2023 and 2025, as well as being named the Spanish league player of the year three years ago.

Despite her individual impact, Weir expressed regret upon her departure that she was unable to secure any silverware with the Spanish side, who finished as runners-up to Barcelona last season.

She now joins a Lyon side that has dominated the domestic league for five consecutive seasons. The club holds a record eight Champions League titles, though they have not won the trophy since 2022. They were defeated 4-0 in this season's final by Barcelona, the same side that eliminated Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Weir's professional journey has included stints at Hibernian, Arsenal, Bristol Academy, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Last year, she made history as the first Scottish player to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or.
