Former Shakhtar, Dnipro, Karpaty, and Ukraine national team defender Artem Fedetskyi has opened up about a collapsed move to German side Werder Bremen. The player was set to join the club as a free agent in 2016 after leaving Dnipro.
Negotiations were well underway at the time, with Ukrainian coach Viktor Skrypnyk managing the team. However, the situation shifted dramatically when the club changed their coaching staff.
Werder is a club with great traditions. We were negotiating, and it was heading towards signing a contract. But at the last moment, they changed the coach. The new coach said he had different plans for the right-back position. So, that option disappeared, — Fedetskyi recalled.
Following the breakdown of the Werder Bremen deal, Fedetskyi quickly secured another move. Within a week, he received an offer from Darmstadt, who were newcomers to the Bundesliga at the time. Seeking the challenge of German football, he accepted the offer without hesitation.
Fedetskyi made 16 appearances for Darmstadt before returning to Ukraine the following season to join Karpaty.
