Former Real Madrid interim manager Álvaro Arbeloa has seen his bid to take charge of Bayer Leverkusen rejected by the Bundesliga side. The German club, currently searching for a new head coach, decided that the former Spanish international was not the right fit for the role at this time.
Although Leverkusen's hierarchy holds Arbeloa in high regard following his youth coaching tenure at Real Madrid, they reportedly lack the conviction that he has progressed sufficiently to lead the team back to the top. Sporting directors Fernando Carro and Simon Rolfes are currently navigating a difficult search for a successor to Kasper Hjulmand.
The management hunt has become complicated after primary target Andoni Iraola was linked with a move to Liverpool. This delay is now impacting the club's transfer business, specifically negotiations for Hertha BSC talent Kennet Eichhorn. The 16-year-old has labeled the coaching vacancy a deal-breaker, stating he will not commit to the club until the position is filled.
Carro and Rolfes are now under significant pressure to finalize their choice before the end of the week, as the uncertainty continues to hinder both squad planning and recruitment efforts.
