Tottenham Hotspur winger Yang Min-hyeok, currently on loan at Belgian club Westerlo, has issued a public apology following a backlash over his comments regarding South Korea's gold medal at the Asian Games. The 20-year-old, who played a key role in the final victory over Japan, faced intense criticism after suggesting the military exemption was the main reason for his motivation.
In South Korea, military service is mandatory for able-bodied men. Winning gold at the Asian Games provides an exemption, allowing athletes to continue their careers with minimal disruption. Yang's comments, which appeared to dismiss the honour of playing for the national team, sparked a firestorm in the local media.
I am sincerely sorry for causing disappointment and discomfort to so many people with my remarks regarding the Asian Games. It is clearly my fault that my words made it appear as though I took the significance of the gold medal lightly. Yang Min-hyeok
In his apology, Yang clarified that while the exemption was a factor, it was not the sole driver of his performance. He acknowledged the insensitive nature of his remarks, particularly regarding those currently serving in the armed forces, and expressed deep regret for potentially belittling the national achievement.
The winger pledged to demonstrate a better attitude and greater responsibility moving forward. By addressing the controversy directly, Yang aims to move past the incident and focus on his professional development while on loan in Belgium.
