The Netherlands face a defensive selection dilemma ahead of their crucial Nations League fixture against Group 2 leaders Greece at the Toumba Stadium. Central defender Jan Paul van Hecke has been forced to withdraw from the squad after sustaining a significant foot injury during the 2-1 victory over Serbia.
Despite attempting to train before the team's departure to Thessaloniki, the pain proved too severe for the defender to continue. Head coach Xavi Hernandez has opted not to call up an emergency replacement, electing to work with a 23-man squad for the trip.
He took a knock against Serbia. He is a warrior, but it really wasn't possible. We have 23 players, so plenty of reserves. Van Dijk can play on the right side perfectly, and if the team needs him there, he will be there for the team. Xavi Hernandez
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Xavi revealed that he has discussed the possibility of shifting captain Virgil van Dijk from his usual left-sided central defensive role to the right. While Van Dijk typically favors the left, the manager is confident in his captain's ability to adapt. Alternatively, Jurrien Timber has been cleared to start, having fully recovered from the injury that sidelined him during the previous international break.
Xavi expects a vibrant and hostile atmosphere in Thessaloniki, noting that ticket demand has far exceeded the 29,000-capacity venue. The Dutch coach remains focused on securing a victory that would lift his side above Greece at the top of the group standings.
