Wout Weghorst involved in scuffle after Europa League exit
Wout Weghorst was visibly irritated following FC Twente's 2-2 draw against Ferencváros. The striker clashed with opponents after confronting the referee.
Wout Weghorst could not hide his frustration after the final whistle of FC Twente's 2-2 draw with Ferencváros in the Europa League qualifiers. Immediately after the game, the striker and teammate Ramiz Zerrouki approached referee Viktor Kopievsky to express their dissatisfaction with his officiating.
The situation escalated when Weghorst refused to shake hands with Ferencváros defender Toon Raemaekers. The Hungarian side's player reacted by tapping the forward on the chest, leading to further involvement from other players, including Mariano Gómez. ESPN commentator Mark van Rijswijk noted that the argument continued for some time on the pitch.
The tension stemmed from Twente's elimination, as the 2-2 draw was not enough to overcome the 2-1 defeat they suffered in the previous leg. Throughout the match, Weghorst had shown visible frustration with his teammates' execution in key moments.
"In the end, it is just emotion and you are simply angry that such a ball comes in," Weghorst explained regarding his late-game anger. "That is one moment you pick out now. But there were plenty of moments like that. In the end, that is just football."
Following this result, Twente will now continue their European campaign in the Conference League.
