Spain's dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia has significantly shifted the landscape in Group H of the 2026 World Cup. Consequently, the pressure is on Uruguay to secure a high-scoring result in their match against Cape Verde later today.
To ensure that the top spot in the group remains within their control ahead of the final showdown against Spain, the 'Celeste' need to defeat the African side by a margin of more than four goals. A smaller victory would mean Uruguay would be forced to beat Spain in their final group stage match to finish first.
Finishing as the group winner is a clear objective for Uruguay, as it would prevent a potential clash against the leaders of Group J—currently reigning champions Argentina—in the round of 32. Despite the mathematical complexity, a draw against Spain in the final round would still be enough for Uruguay to advance to the knockout stage.
Failure to secure a comfortable win against Cape Verde would leave Uruguay in a precarious position, where their qualification and final standing could depend on other results and goal difference.
